Back to the Foundation: Our Two Days of Vidal Sassoon Mastery in NYC
There's a reason the best hairdressers never stop learning. Trends come and go, but the fundamentals of a great haircut are timeless. That's exactly what took Hunter and MJ to New York City for a two-day Vidal Sassoon mastery class, and it's an experience we're still buzzing about.

The man who changed hair forever
It's hard to overstate Vidal Sassoon's impact on our industry. His brand began in London's West End in 1954, when he opened his first salon on Bond Street. At the time, hair was all about rollers, teasing and lacquered updos. Sassoon brought an architectural approach to cutting in the late 1950s and early 1960s, moving away from stiff, sprayed styles and freeing women from sleeping in curlers and making weekly salon trips.
For Sassoon, the cut was everything. He shaped hair into geometric forms and sharp angles designed to complement each client's bone structure. His most famous creation, the Five Point, was the cut he considered his finest work and the hardest to achieve. It was first cut on British model Grace Coddington, and his work was so influential that fashion models regularly flew from Paris to London just to get it. He also pioneered open salon layouts and men's salon spaces that are now industry standards.
Today, his precision-first, wash-and-wear philosophy remains the backbone of modern haircutting, and it's the same philosophy we bring to every guest at the walden.
Learning from one of the best
Our educator for the two days was the incredible Traci Sakosits. She spent 28 years with Sassoon, including more than a decade as creative director, coaching and inspiring students and stylists. With more than three decades of experience, her career has been defined by precision, discipline and a deep commitment to education.
Traci is now Vice President of Education and Creative Direction at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institutes, where she oversees 18 schools. She has led shows and seminars around the world, presented collections on beauty runways and styled Sassoon editorial shoots. Learning directly from someone with that much history and mastery was truly an honor.
Two days, one shape, countless lessons
Over two days, Hunter and MJ went deep into a traditional Vidal Sassoon shape with hands-on education from start to finish. This wasn't a class you watch from the back of a room. It was sectioning, elevation, balance and precision, cut after cut, with Traci guiding every detail.

A truly great haircut is built, not guessed.
That was the biggest takeaway. Every line has a purpose, and every shape is designed to fall perfectly on its own. We came home with sharper technique, a renewed respect for the fundamentals and a lot of inspiration to share with our team.
